Did you know you could be passed over for an interview because you didn’t include your zip code on your resume? It’s true. In this post I’ll explain exactly what you should–and shouldn’t–share about your location.
Why do employers want to know your location?
It’s not so they can contact you about the job; they’ll do that via email or phone. But employers know that hires from outside of the company’s city are a retention risk. Out-of-towners may change their mind about relocating, either before or after starting the job, sometimes at great expense to the company. So unless the role is remote, employers would much rather hire someone local.
So, should you put your full address on the resume?
No, for several reasons. First, it adds clutter. Every bit of unnecessary information makes the document more cumbersome to read. It also distracts from what really sells you: your skills, experience, accomplishments and other qualifications. Second, your address may trigger stereotypes about your personal background. And finally, considering that there are lots of scam job postings out there, it’s possible that your personal information could be misused.
Is city and state enough to include?
Not quite! Some applicant tracking systems like Taleo allow recruiters to search the system for resumes within a radius of the company’s zip code. In that case, if your zip code isn’t on your resume, you lose your chance at an interview.
In most cases, it’s best to include your city, state and zip code on your resume.
Are there times when you shouldn’t include your zip code on your resume? Or even your city?
Yes. If you’re applying for a job out of town, your current location is likely to count against you. Solving this problem isn’t as simple as omitting your location. In How to Write a Relocation Resume, I explain how to maximize your chances of getting an interview even though you live far away.
Also, if the role is 100% remote, location information is irrelevant. In this case you can leave it off. For related tips, read my post, How to Write a Resume for a Remote Job.
