Questions to Ask in Interviews about the Team Culture

by THEA kelley | May 7, 2020

With job interviews taking place remotely, it can be harder to get a sense of your prospective teammates and how you’ll work together. Here are some examples of questions to ask the interviewers.

Tip: In choosing and preparing questions, keep in mind that a good question is one that’s asked of the right person, at the right time and in the right tone of voice.

Which of these questions are a good fit for your upcoming interview?

  • Every team is different. How would you describe the culture or style of this team?
  • Who would I interact with the most in this role? Will I have an opportunity to meet with them during the interview process?
  • Where are the team members located geographically?
  • What advice do you have about working well with the various team members?
  • What advice do you have about getting to know the team as a newcomer?
  • What does collaboration look like in this department? Is it highly organized, or more informal? Can you give me an example?
  • What collaboration tools are used and for what purposes?
  • If hired, what can I do to become a highly valued teammate from the team’s point of view?
  • How long have my prospective teammates been working here?
  • Have certain team members become the go-to persons or acknowledged experts in certain areas? Tell me more.
  • Is there an area of expertise currently in short supply on the team, that you’re looking to increase with this hire?
  • Does your team have certain traditions, whether official or not? If so, which tradition is your favorite?
  • What’s your favorite part of the company culture?

You’ll also need to prepare questions about the company, the manager, the role and other aspects of the opportunity. To help you build that list, take a look at my post, The Best Questions to Ask in a Job Interview.
