Nearly 39% of American adults currently have a side hustle, according to a 2023 Bankrate survey, whether it’s ecommerce, dogwalking or freelance bookkeeping. They do it for a variety of reasons. They may want extra money, a creative outlet, or a chance to explore and develop new skills.
They may be surprised to find that their side gig also makes them feel more upbeat and perform better at their day job. A study of 337 employees by Hudson Sessions, an assistant professor of management and organizations at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.
“They can have these positive, enriching experiences that carry forward into their full-time work.” Sessions was quoted in an article on Business Insider, “in a way that can enrich the full-time work . . . It will help your job to the extent that you can feel empowered by it.”
